Navigating the Hidden Cafes of Mullae-dong
Yesterday, we explored the savory side of Mullae–dong, so today, it’s only right that we move on to the grand finale: dessert! Looking at a map of Mullae–dong, I was actually blown away by just how many hidden cafes are tucked away in every little alley.
While I’d love to visit every single one of them myself, there are simply too many to count! To save you some time (and legwork), I’ve handpicked and compressed the absolute best spots into one quick guide. Ready for a sugar rush? Let’s dive in! ;)

Salt Fruit: Where the Scent of Freshly Baked Salt Bread Fills the Air
First up on our list is Salt Fruit. This place is a dream for bread lovers because they bake everything right on-site. Their specialty seems to be the famous “Salt Bread” (Sogeum-ppang), and you can tell they take it seriously.

The biggest highlight here is the dedicated bakery glass room located right in the center of the cafe. Since they’re constantly baking, you have the amazing chance to grab a bun that’s literally fresh out of the oven. There’s nothing quite like the contrast of that warm, buttery inside and a light sprinkle of salt while you sip your coffee!

Soak Up the Sun and Good Vibes
One of the best things about this place is how it’s drenched in natural light. It’s so bright and airy that just sitting there, watching the world go by, instantly puts you in a great mood. It’s the perfect spot to recharge your batteries while enjoying that warm, cozy atmosphere. If you’re looking for a little sunshine with your coffee, this is exactly where you need to be! ;)

Steel Bite: A Red-Brick Sanctuary on a Rainy Day
I actually stumbled upon Steel Bite by pure chance. I was wandering around Mullae-dong on a rainy day when a striking red-brick building at the intersection caught my eye—I just had to go in!

One of the cutest things about this place is their “mini-pairing” ; a tiny, adorable piece of croissant on the side. Since they roast and sell their own beans, the rich aroma of coffee seemed to hang even heavier and deeper in the air because of the rain. It’s a memory that still feels incredibly cozy and fragrant.

Kissa Goguma: A Portal to Japanese Nostalgia and Childhood Memories
Stepping into Kissa Goguma feels like taking a sudden detour to Japan without ever leaving Seoul. This cafe perfectly captures the essence of a Kissaten(a traditional Japanese-style coffee shop that focuses on a vintage atmosphere and classic hand-drip coffee.)

What makes it even more authentic is the owner, who is Japanese and runs the entire shop solo with incredible care.

The vibe is exceptionally warm and cozy, and you can truly feel the heart put into every cup of coffee and every plate of dessert.
But the magic doesn’t stop inside the cafe. It’s located on the second floor of an old apartment complex’s shopping center. For anyone who grew up in Korea during the 80s or 90s, this place hits you with a wave of nostalgia. It instantly transported me back to being a little kid, walking through those same corridors on my way to piano lessons. Whether you’re looking for Japanese charm or a sentimental trip down memory lane, this cafe offers a beautiful sense of comfort both inside and out.

Slot Mullae: Stepping Through a Portal to Another World
Walking into Slot Mullae feels like a scene from a movie—you pull open a massive, heavy wooden door, and suddenly, you’re transported into a completely different mood. (For those who haven’t been, Slot Mullae is a boutique cafe famous for its artistic, cave-like interior and exceptionally crafted pastries.)

I stopped by with a friend for some coffee and their signature Mont Blanc pie, and the experience was almost meditative. There’s a mysterious, grounding quality to the space that just settles your soul and makes everything feel calm. If you’re looking for a spot where the atmosphere is just as rich and layered as the desserts, this is the place to find your quiet moment in the middle of the city.

Mullae Chin-chin: A Hidden Rooftop Escape, Wine and Breezes
After leaving the cafe, the weather was just too perfect to go home, so my friend and I decided to stop by a nearby rooftop wine terrace for a quick glass.

The entrance to the building was so worn down and sketchy that we found ourselves whispering, “Is this actually the right place?” But after climbing the stairs and being guided up to the very top, a wide-open, breezy terrace suddenly appeared!

Everyone there was soaking up the fantastic rooftop vibe. While the gentle breeze was absolute perfection in this season, I have to be honest—unless it’s spring or autumn, the terrace seating might be a bit tough to handle. I highly recommend visiting only when the weather is at its absolute best.
As for the wine, the list is on the lighter, more approachable side. Rather than a high-end professional wine bar, think of it as a casual hangout spot where people in their 20s and 30s can enjoy a laid-back drink. It’s all about the mood and the view here!
Mullae-dong: The Perfect Alternative to the Hustle of Seongsu
I hope this journey through Mullae–dong has sparked your curiosity! While Seongsu–dong is undoubtedly iconic, it can sometimes feel a bit overwhelming with the massive crowds. If you’re looking for that same creative, “industrial-chic” energy but with a bit more raw soul and breathing room, Mullae-dong is the perfect place to turn your gaze. It’s a fantastic alternative that offers a truly unique side of Seoul.
I encourage you to explore the hidden gems of Seongsu, but definitely make some time for a trip to Mullae-dong as well. I wish you a wonderful and vibrant adventure in this charming neighborhood! I’ll be back soon with more great content and hidden spots to share. See you next time! ;)
