Seongsu-dong Cafe Hopping: Finding Subtle Joys in Seoul’s Trendiest District

These days, for many international travelers visiting South Korea—especially young women—“Cafe Hopping” in Seoul has become an absolute bucket-list experience.

Korean cafes have evolved far beyond spaces that simply sell coffee and desserts; they have transformed into interactive cultural hubs and immersive sensory playgrounds. As someone whose greatest joy is hunting down independent, character-rich cafes rather than predictable corporate franchises, I completely understand that thrill!

At the absolute epicenter of this global trend sits Seongsu-dong (성수동). This neighborhood is packed with massive, jaw-dropping spaces that will make you wonder, “Wait… is this seriously a cafe?”

However, today’s feature isn’t about one of those overwhelmingly grand, flashy spots. Instead, I want to introduce you to a charming space that delivers a much more intimate, clever, and subtle kind of joy.

Not too long ago, a guest visited me at my office located right here in Seongsu-dong. They arrived with massive expectations, eager to experience the legendary “creative fun” that this neighborhood is famous for. As I brainstormed where to take them for a memorable yet refreshing experience, I decided to casually lead them toward a very specific, intriguing corner… ; )

As I led my guest down the street, we stopped right in front of a plain wall. They looked at me with total confusion—because to the untrained eye, there was absolutely nothing here that looked like a typical storefront!

Greenhole: The Secret Wall That Serves Custom Gelato

And that is exactly where the genius of this place lies.

At Greenhole (그린홀), there is no grand entrance, no indoor seating, and no counter. Instead, the entire operation happens through a literal, whimsical little hole in the wall! ^^

To check the menu, you simply scan a sleek QR code mounted right next to the opening. Once you choose your combinations, you place your order through the small green hole, and the staff behind the wall gets straight to work crafting your treat.

But the surprises don’t stop at the ordering system. Greenhole doesn’t serve their gelato in boring, wasteful paper cups. Instead, they scoop it into a crisp, delicious cup made entirely out of cookies! On top of that, you get to fully customize your dessert by selecting your favorite gelato flavor, crunchy toppings, and a rich syrup drizzle.

While everyone in our group was thoroughly entertained by the whimsical “gelato emerging from a wall” performance, let’s be brutally honest—the summer heat in Seoul is no joke. Standing on the sizzling asphalt of Seongsu-dong under the blazing mid-day sun while trying to enjoy a delicate scoop of artisanal gelato is a race against time!

Before our beautifully customized cookie cups could even think about melting, I pulled out my second surprise of the day.

The striking entrance of Green Room cafe in Seongsu-dong, revealing a glimpse of the bold red carpet through the door.

We took our fresh gelato and headed straight up to the 3rd floor of the exact same building, where a gorgeous rooftop cafe called Grin Room (그린룸) awaited us!

The beautiful secret behind this layout is that Greenhole (1F) and Grin Room (3F) are entirely run and operated by the exact same brand! They designed this space as a connected multi-level experience.

Once you receive your gelato from the whimsical wall on the first floor, you have two cool architectural routes to reach the air-conditioned 3rd-floor lounge:

🚨 AN HONEST TRAVELER TIP: Please note that this building does NOT have an elevator. Since you have to climb all the way up to the 3rd floor solely by foot via stairs, I would not recommend this spot if you are traveling with heavy luggage, baby strollers, or if you or your companions have mobility difficulties.

The Grand Reveal: Bright Interiors, Retro Train Views, and Rooftop Wine

Looking at this aged, gritty commercial building from the outside, you would absolutely never imagine that such a bright, gorgeous, and airy cafe was hiding up here on the third floor! ^^ That is the signature charm of Seongsu-dong—the art of the unexpected.

While the spacious interior feels incredibly refreshing thanks to the massive, crystal-clear panoramic windows, it’s the expansive outdoor terrace that truly steals the show.

As a fun side note: the elevated Seoul subway tracks run directly alongside the building. While some might find the occasional rumble a bit noisy, if you look at it through a romantic lens, it actually adds an incredibly unique, nostalgic, and cinematic retro atmosphere to the terrace!

A Rare Sanctuary for Families and Group Travelers

If you’ve ever traveled around Seongsu-dong, you know how notoriously cramped most independent cafes are. Grin Room is a fantastic, rare alternative because it features generously spaced group seating and a wide-open terrace that can effortlessly accommodate large group travelers or families. It’s a wonderful spot to gather during the day for sweets, or to wind down in the evening over a casual, romantic glass of wine.

In the end, my guest and I got to experience the absolute best of both worlds: the playful curiosity of the 1F hidden wall and the refreshing comfort of the 3F lounge. My friend, who came with massive expectations for Seongsu-dong, walked away completely thrilled and satisfied—which is exactly why I couldn’t wait to share this hidden gem with you all. It’s still a relatively secret, authentic local spot!

I truly hope this brings a pocket of unexpected joy to your next stroll through Seoul. Stay tuned, and I will be back soon with another exciting neighborhood story! ; )
