This is also a fantastic “meal-prep” dish. You can make a big batch, portion it out, and keep it in the freezer. On busy mornings, just heat it up and serve! It’s also an ideal choice for a late-night snack when you don’t want anything too heavy, or for those days when you’re feeling a bit under the weather. Keep reading to learn how to make this versatile Tuna Porridge (Chamchi-juk)!
The Curious Case of Korea’s Love for Canned Tuna
Do you have canned tuna in your pantry? In Korea, it’s a staple you’ll find in almost every household.
Many international friends wonder why canned tuna (and Spam!) are so popular in Korea, even appearing in elaborate holiday gift sets. The reason lies in a fascinating mix of history and marketing.
When canned tuna first arrived in Korea in the 1980s, it was an exotic, imported ingredient. Because trade wasn’t as open as it is today, it was quite expensive and perceived as a luxury item that only affluent families could afford. Naturally, when people looked for “valuable” gifts for the holidays, canned tuna became a top choice.
Moreover, Koreans value practicality in gifts. Unlike fresh fruit, canned tuna has a very long shelf life and can be used in countless dishes, making it a “fail-proof” gift.
The marketing played a huge role, too. Early advertisements promoted tuna as a high-protein health food. I still vividly remember the TV commercials claiming that the DHA in tuna would make children smarter! As a kid, I truly believed eating tuna would boost my brainpower. ;)
Thanks to that history, canned tuna has naturally evolved from a luxury gift into one of Korea’s most beloved and versatile ingredients.
Recipe: The “Brain-Boosting” Tuna Porridge
(Perfect for a healthy breakfast or a light dinner!)

Ingredients (Servings: 2)
- Cooked Multi-grain Rice: 1.5 to 2 cups (Leftover rice works perfectly!)
- Canned Tuna: 1 can (approx. 5 oz / 150g), drained
- Vegetables (The “Fridge-Clearers”):
- Onion: 1/4 cup, finely minced
- Carrot: 1/4 cup, finely minced
- Zucchini: 1/4 cup, finely minced
- Water (or Broth): 4 to 5 cups (Adjust depending on your preferred consistency)
- Sesame Oil: 1 to 2 tablespoons
- Toppings (Optional): Toasted sesame seeds, shredded seaweed (Gim), or a drizzle of sesame oil.
(Seasoning) - Korean Anchovy Fish Sauce (Myeolchi-aekjeot): 1 tablespoon (This is the secret to deep flavor!)(Optional)
- Broth Tablet (Coin Yuksu): 1 tablet (Optional, but adds great depth)
- Salt: To taste for the final touch.
<Instructions>

- Prep the Tuna & Veggies: Drain the oil from the tuna. Finely mince your onion, carrot, and zucchini so they blend perfectly into the porridge.
- Sauté the Aromatics: In a large pot over medium heat, add 1 tablespoon of sesame oil. Sauté the onions and carrots first until the onions turn translucent. Add the zucchini and the drained tuna, stirring for another minute.
- Add Rice & Water: Toss in your cooked multi-grain rice and stir it with the veggies and tuna for about 30 seconds. Pour in 4 cups of water (and drop in the broth tablet if you’re using one).
- Simmer: Bring it to a boil, then reduce the heat to low. Let it simmer, stirring occasionally to prevent the rice from sticking to the bottom. If the porridge gets too thick, add another cup of water.
- Season: Once the rice grains are soft and the porridge has reached your desired consistency, add 1 tablespoon of anchovy fish sauce. Taste it, and add a pinch of salt if needed.
- Serve: Ladle the warm porridge into bowls. Garnish with sesame seeds or a few drops of sesame oil for an extra nutty aroma.

Warm Your Body, Boost Your Immunity: The Magic of a Warm Breakfast
As you can see, this tuna porridge is incredibly simple to whip up. It’s an exceptionally hearty breakfast, especially during the colder months, leaving you feeling full and energized for the day ahead.
Sometimes, a bowl of cold cereal with milk can feel a bit too chilly for the body first thing in the morning. Many Koreans—especially the older generations—strongly prefer warm meals to start the day. There is actually scientific evidence suggesting that keeping your basal body temperature warm can help strengthen your immune system, so it’s definitely a win for your health!
I also highly recommend this dish for dinner if you’re looking for something light and easy to digest before bed.
As I’ve shared in my previous posts (check the link below!), I’m a big believer in eating “stomach-friendly” foods in the evening to ensure a restful night. I hope this warm bowl of comfort brings as much health and joy to your home as it does to mine!
I’ll be back soon with more simple, delicious, and healthy recipes. Stay tuned! ;)
