Welcome to Hannam-dong: Seoul’s Chic Culinary Playground
Today, I am so excited to take you to Hannam-dong, one of my absolute favorite neighborhoods in Seoul! Nestled comfortably between Namsan Mountain and the Han River, Hannam-dong is a unique gem where quiet, upscale residential vibes seamlessly meet vibrant artistic energy.

Introducing My Recent Go-To Favorite: Daemulseom in Hannam-dong
Today, I want to introduce you to a place I’ve been visiting quite often lately whenever I’m craving incredible fish and great drinks. It’s a hidden gem named Daemulseom (대물섬), tucked right into the vibrant heart of Hannam-dong!
The name Daemulseom roughly translates to “The Island of Massive Catches,” and it truly lives up to its bold identity. Known for serving top-tier aged sashimi (Sookseong-hoe) along with an unbelievable lineup of seafood-based bites (Anju), it has quickly stolen my heart as my absolute favorite go-to spot in the neighborhood.

Celebrity-Approved Seafood Haven: A Spot for True Foodies
Daemulseom is actually widely renowned as a favorite haunt among famous celebrity foodies! Because of its huge popularity, the wait times can be quite brutal—so I highly recommend booking your spot in advance using reservation apps like Catch Table.
Since they source only the highest quality, premium seafood ingredients, the price point here leans slightly on the higher side. Looking at the signatures and photos of visiting celebrities lining the walls, the crowd naturally tilts toward seasoned stars in their 30s and beyond—like TOP from BIGBANG or members of Girls’ Generation (SNSD), along with top-tier actors and veteran singers!
(To be honest, I did see a few photos of current younger idols posted on the wall too… but I sadly couldn’t recognize who they were! 😅)

The Secret to Fame: Aged Sashimi & Salt Gimbap Pairing
The true reason Daemulseom became a viral sensation comes down to one genius pairing: Aged Sashimi (Sookseong-hoe) and Salt Gimbap (Sogeum-gimbap)!
Unlike fresh Japanese sashimi, aged sashimi goes through a curing process that enhances both its umami flavor and chewy texture. While ultra-fresh raw fish can sometimes just feel cold and firm with little taste, cured fish releases a deeper, richer, and creamier savoriness with every bite.

And the restaurant’s ultimate hidden magic trick? Serving it with Salt Gimbap. On the surface, it looks deceptively simple—just rice seasoned with aromatic sesame oil and salt, wrapped in seaweed. Yet, it tastes utterly addictive!

Table Guide: How to Enjoy It Like a Pro
Each table features a cute instruction card with their recommended flavor combos:
- Combo 1: Place a piece of aged sashimi on top of a Salt Gimbap, add a strip of washed aged kimchi (Mukeunji), and top it with their house-made special Ssamjang (seasoned soybean paste).
- Combo 2: On a fresh perilla leaf, layer sea algae, dried seaweed, a piece of raw fish, and a dab of savory Mel-jeot(salted anchovy sauce).
(Of course, there are no strict rules—feel free to dip and mix according to your own taste! 😉)

Korean vs. Japanese Sashimi Culture: The Battle of Dips!
What makes Korean sashimi culture so unique compared to Japan is the overwhelming variety of dipping sauces. While Japanese sashimi mainly sticks to soy sauce and freshly grated wasabi, Koreans love to experiment! We dip raw fish in tangy Chogochujang (sweet and sour chili paste), savory Ssamjang (a mix of soybean paste, chili paste, sesame oil, and minced garlic), or salted seafood sauces like Mel-jeot.
Thanks to this colorful parade of sauces, you never get tired of eating raw fish—every single bite feels like an entirely new dish!

The Addictive Starter: Fresh Perilla Leaf Salad
There was another brilliant side dish (Anju) that kept our palates completely refreshed throughout the meal. As soon as we sat down, they served an appetizer-like salad alongside the basic table setup—a lightly tossed, fragrant Perilla Leaf Salad (Ggaenip-muchim).
I know perilla leaves can be a pretty unfamiliar herb for many foreign foodies. If I had to describe its distinct flavor, I’d say it sits somewhere right between crunchy lettuce and bold cilantro! Just like how some people (including myself!) can’t handle cilantro, I’ve heard many non-Koreans find the unique herbal aroma of perilla leaves a bit challenging at first.
As for me? I am an absolute, unapologetic Perilla Leaf Lover! Whether it’s paired with grilled meat or fresh raw fish, I can never get enough of it. Naturally, I devoured this entire plate of perilla leaf salad before our main dishes even hit the table! 😅💚

Next Up: The Showstopping Main Bites!
Shall we move on to the next set of dishes designed to keep your appetite fully engaged?
First up was a dish with an incredible visual impact: Fried Rockfish (Ureok-twigiim)! They deep-fry a whole rockfish to crisp perfection and coat it in a flavorful glaze. Once brought to the table, the server expertly dissects the fish right in front of you, making it super easy to eat.

While the fried rockfish show was definitely impressive, I personally lean towards dishes that highlight the pure, natural roasted flavors of seafood. And that’s when my absolute favorite hit the table: Steamed Whole Squid (Tong-ojingeo-jjim)! 🦑
Served piping hot with steam billowing off the plate, this whole squid is steamed intact with its rich innards. Taking a bite of that tender squid filled with creamy, nutty inner goodness is pure bliss! It really cemented my love for dishes that let the fresh, unadulterated flavors of the ingredients shine through.

The Ultimate Game-Changer: The Legendary “Bok-Maekju”!
To be completely honest, THIS was the decisive reason I completely fell head over heels for this place!
Enter: Bok-Maekju (Bokbunja Beer Cocktail)! 🍓🍺
It all started when our server kindly brought us a round on the house. It’s basically an upgraded, elevated version of Korea’s famous Somaek (Soju + Beer), crafted by mixing ice-cold beer, Korean black raspberry syrup (Bokbunja-cheong), and a splash of soju.
Handing it over, the server said with a smile:
“If you chug this in one smooth gulp, it tastes just like a Strawberry Latte!”
I was super skeptical at first—I mean, how on earth could a cocktail made of beer and soju taste like a sweet Strawberry Latte?!
BUT WOW… ONE SIP AND MY MIND WAS BLOWN! 🤯💖
The creamy foam combined with the tart sweetness of the black raspberry created an insanely velvety, berry-milkshake-like flavor profile that went down impossibly smooth. It is dangerously delicious and easily the coolest drink surprise of the night!

The Secret is Out: Becoming True Regulars for the Bok-Maekju!
After visiting Daemulseom again and again, we eventually managed to unlock the top-secret hidden ingredient in their iconic black raspberry syrup (Bokbunja-cheong)! Haha, that’s what true dedication looks like! 🤫
While a glass comes with a slightly steep price tag of 11,000 KRW, here is a MUST-KNOW Insider Tip for you:
💡 Pro Tip for Free Drinks: If you leave a review on the reservation app (like Catch Table), they will serve you a FREE glass of Bok-Maekju!
Even better? The server comes right to your table and performs a mesmerizing whirlpool/tornado spin right before your eyes to mix the cocktail perfectly before handing it to you! Make sure to remember this hack!

Nostalgic Comfort Food: Braised Cutlassfish (Galchi-jorim)
Shall we keep the feast going with another incredible dish?
Next up on our table was Braised Cutlassfish (Galchi-jorim)! This beloved Korean comfort dish features tender cutlassfish simmered slowly over a bed of sliced radish (Mu) in a rich, spicy marinade made with gochugaru (red chili flakes), garlic, and chili paste.
For most Koreans, this is the ultimate home-cooked meal that instantly evokes warm childhood memories. Eating a piece of that melt-in-your-mouth, flavor-soaked radish first, followed by soft fish meat gently placed over steaming white rice by your mom or grandmother—it’s pure heaven on a plate!
💡 Recipe Teaser: This dish was so deeply nostalgic that it brought back sweet memories of my family’s cooking. I’ll definitely bring you a home-style Galchi-jorim recipe in a future post so you can try making it yourself!
Korean vs. Japanese Simmered Fish
Japan also has many famous simmered fish dishes (like Buri Daikon), but while Japanese style relies heavily on a sweet and savory dashi-soy sauce base, the Korean version goes all-in on bold, garlic-forward, and fiery chili flavors!
Comparing the two styles is such a fun culinary journey for your palate. And if you order this dish, please don’t forget to order a bowl of fresh white rice—scooping a spoonful of that spicy, savory broth over rice is an absolute non-negotiable rule! 🍚

The True Korean Finale: Stone Plate Jajang Ramen!
Up until this point, we had been enjoying incredibly healthy, high-protein bites—especially raw fish, which is arguably the ultimate guilt-free drink companion!
But let’s be honest: What is the absolute non-negotiable finale to every Korean drinking session? That’s right—RAMEN! 🍜
While spicy red broth ramen is usually the go-to, since we had just devoured the fiery red Galchi-jorim, we unanimously agreed on Jajang Ramen (Black Bean Sauce Ramen)!
They served it piping hot on a sizzling stone plate, keeping the noodles continuously warm. In that very moment, a simple instant ramen instantly elevated into a high-end gourmet culinary masterpiece!

Warm Hospitality: The Beauty of Korean Jeong
Maybe because we ordered so many dishes throughout the night, the restaurant even brought us an extra dish on the house (Service Anju)! This warm, generous hospitality is what we Koreans call “Jeong” (정)—an unspoken affection and warmhearted connection shared through food.
Surrounded by incredible food, our upgraded Somaek (and that unforgettable Bok-Maekju!), and heartfelt hospitality, we wrapped up a truly magical evening in Hannam-dong.
If you ever find yourself in Seoul searching for the ultimate aged sashimi, creative cocktails, and an authentic taste of Korean nightlife, Daemulseom in Hannam-dong is an absolute must-visit!
